A spinal cord tumor is an abnormal growth of muscle inside or around the spinal cord. First, they grow in the spine, and then they cause cancer and spread to other areas of the spine. Also known as an intradural tumor. It is caused by genetic mutations. As it grows, it damages blood vessels, the spinal cord, meninges, nerve roots, and spinal cells. The tumor can also shrink the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing damage. Symptoms include back pain, headache, muscle weakness and numbness in the arms, difficulty walking, loss of sensation, difficulty urinating, and spinal deformity. Treatment may include radiotherapy and chemotherapy or a combination of both. Depending on the type of treatment it can take weeks to recover after treatment.
